Claiming my Remix

Bit late on the claiming, but here goes anyhow.

Title: There Is Always The Moon
Pairings: Harry/Draco, various background canon pairings
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: blood and mild gore, mild body horror. Um, an extremely slow build?
Word Count: 159K
Summary: Draco's life after the war is everything he wanted it to be: it's simple, and quiet, and predictable, and safe. But when a mysterious curse shatters the peace he'd worked so hard to build, there's only one person he can trust to help him. After all, Harry Potter has saved his life before. Now Draco has to believe that Potter will be able to do it one more time. (A remix of If the Sun Goes Black by pasdexcuses)
Disclaimer: All Harry Potter characters belong to JK Rowling; the plot and some of the dialogue in the final chapter of this story come from If the Sun Goes Black.

(Note: This is very much intended to be read as a companion to If the Sun Goes Black. The ending especially relies very heavily on the assumption that the reader is familiar with events established in the original.)


So, hey. This one's mine! It turned out very different (and a whole lot longer) than I expected it to, but sometimes the story goes in the direction it needs to. I'm quite proud of how it turned out, actually.



I knew right away this was the story I wanted to do. When I received my Remix assignment and saw that this was the starred fic, I thought I'd take a look at it and see if it was something that appealed to me. And then halfway through the first scene my brain was screaming at me, YES THIS ONE WE ARE DOING THIS ONE. And that was pretty much that. Because, holy fuck. There is amnesia and pining and Aurors and fake relationships and mystery and horror and just, everything. This fic had just about everything that makes my little fandom heart go pitter-pat and I instantly had a thousand and one ideas and was so so so excited about it.

I was sort of nervous about writing a novel on a deadline, but eidheann_writes, who is very wise, pointed out that I've done it before and at least this time I knew it was going to be a novel when I started it, so that I can at least avoid the usual fuck fuck fuck I'm accidentally writing a novel! meltdown I usually go through. And then I was like, yeah, okay. That's true. I can make this work. (At this point I was still convinced it'd be under 100k. HA.) So I spent December reading and rereading and making outlines, brainstorming and sketching out scene ideas, and then, armed with a solid plan and about 7k in notes, I started writing in earnest in January.

Turns out that knowing it was going to be novel-length didn't make writing it any easier. Getting this done was a challenge, but a really really good one for me, I think. It was very interesting to see how quickly I'm capable of producing a novel when I get down to it and I'm very proud of my accomplishment in that regard. But that being said, I don't think I'll be doing this again because it was pretty much all I did for two months. Which I guess just goes to show that you can finish pretty much anything if you pour enough hours into it. XP



I owe a lot of thank yous to a lot of people on this and honestly, without them this story would not have gotten done.

Massive, massive thanks to birdsofshore, catplusfox, dicta_contrion, and eidheann_writes (and can I say how thrilled I am that your usernames are so wonderfully alphabetical??) along with a last-minute assist from Tiny Steeb. Honestly, this story is far better for having had your input. I looooooove slow builds and I'm pretty sure we were well into 100k here without so much as a kiss. And it was beautiful and amazing. You have written some of my favorite Harry but this proves you write Draco perfectly, as well. So much love to you. 😘

Can I tell you that we were just SO THRILLED that you were that inspired by your remix assignment and that our fest was going to get A NOVEL from FIRETHESOUND. So it wasn't like it was much of a hardship for us to grant you extensions :)

I was so happy when I saw this story was going to be remixed. The original was written for a prompt I left so I was like, TWO FOR ONE! \o/\o/\o/ LOL

And I just, like I've been telling you back when you were anonymous writer, I loved seeing this from Draco's POV. I love all that rich background you gave us in this story. Those gems, those little details in Draco's life, all he went through, his fears and desperation and his hopes pined on Harry helping to figure out what's going on. GOD. :)

And oh my god, the crazy, wonderful, uncomfortable conversations with Draco's parents, the moment Zelta tries to make him touch silver. That kitchen scene, so familiar with Harry ~dancing. At the Burrow. <33

And it's amazing, knowing all the work it took, just wow. *hugs*
