WIP Wednesday
Jan. 13th, 2021 08:41 pmStill not working on any of the things I actually should be working on, but progress was made nonetheless! Which, considering everything else going on in the world at large right now, I will absolutely take.
New words this week : 2401 words which is somewhat better than last week!
WIPs worked on this week : 1, with no new WIPs (yay!)
HP
☆ Stay aka Don't Think Twice #5: 2401 words which brings the total to 7978 and it's seriously like thisclose to finished! It's missing one bit of conversation that I'm not quite sure how to bridge, and then.... well, then I have to figure out what to actually do with it, since it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and I haven't started the next part yet and can't promise that it won't be another six fucking years until it updates again so I don't know. I mean, the first step is rereading the rest of the series myself so I can edit this thing properly, and then sorting out a beta for it. But after that, I'm not sure what to do with it. Part of me kind of wants to delete parts 2-4 off AO3 and repost them on part 1 as chapters, which I really ought to have done in the first place but when I dumped all my stuff onto AO3 initially I was coming from LJ where posting a chaptered fic vs. posting a series was functionally identical so it didn't even occur to me to do otherwise. But, then I know I'm going to be breaking links if people have them saved, and I'd have to leave it marked as a series to not disrupt people's subscriptions, and then that whole cliffhanger thing is going to invite a whole new round of "Where's the next part!?" sort of comments which are so stressful and. I don't know. I'm probably way overthinking all of this. In any case, it's not done yet so I get to put off deciding for now.

Date: 2021-01-14 05:18 pm (UTC)For Don't Think Twice, are you essentially thinking of turning it from a series to a single WIP? So all future installments would be in the same fic?
Some things you could do:
1. Create a private collection and add the later fics to them so they still exist but are unrevealed - this would allow you to post them publically again in the future as opposed to just deleting, especially if you want to repost the later versions as chapters. It also means that the links won't entirely break, they'll just route to an unrevealed work so they won't necessarily have a panic that you removed it entirely? And if you leave the first work as part of the series to maintain people's subscriptions, then you could also put an author's note on the overall series explaining why works are ~hidden~ etc. You could also do this with all of the fics if you want to temporarily not have people reading the series until you absolutely finish it.
2. You could add the works as chapters and *also* just leave up the existing versions with a big author's notes redirecting? Either indefinitely, or for a period of time. You could also turn off commenting on these fics if that would help.

Date: 2021-01-14 10:03 pm (UTC)I can't remember if I've read your Don't Think Twice series - I'll have to have a read so I'm ready whenever you update!

Date: 2021-01-19 05:22 am (UTC)You could always post Don't Think Twice #5 with an end note that says "For each comment asking when the next part will be posted, or pressuring me to write and post the next part, I will add 1 additional month to my mental plan for when this will be finished. Guess how many assholes asked on part 4?" Just kidding, I'm sure assholes would also be assholes about that. Could you make it one of those fics that you have to be logged into A03 to read, at least? So that at the minimum you know who's being a jerk?
For me Don't Think Twice does have a kind of internal part-by-part structural separation/structural logic that wouldn't *quite* make sense as a chaptered story, but I'm not the one who wrote it, so that's just one opinion. Also, I'm obviously literally not active in fandom except here but hit me up if you want a perhaps overly-invested beta. ;-)
I'm actually thinking of signing up for HDBB since it's one of the fests that seems like it's for sure open to folks who haven't posted anything in fandom yet (With the idea I'll be able to write during maternity leave? Lol, this may be a bad plan). And what I'd likely be writing is an idea that was inspired by Don't Think Twice (though at this point, it's wildly removed from what actually happens in Don't Think Twice). So, full circle!

Date: 2021-01-21 01:32 am (UTC)I really like the idea of setting it so it's only visible to logged-in users, because as you said that'll force people who want to be jerks to do it with their usernames instead of anon... And really lovely to get feedback on series vs chapters. I keep waffling on it, so it's good to get other people's opinions <3
