Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner 2018

In your own space, talk about why you're participating in Snowflake and, if you’ve participated in the past, how the challenge has affected you. What drew you to it? What did you take away from it? What do you hope to accomplish this year?

I've done this before, I think last year and I'm pretty sure the year before? My intention this year is the same, to get in the habit of posting more often. But I've never managed to make it all the way to the end the other times I've tried it. Hopefully this'll be the year, because it was a lot of fun at least for the little bit I managed to stick with it!

Day 9: In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I’ve already done a post about goals for the upcoming year, so I took this day’s assignment as the opportunity to do something I’ve been meaning to do for a while. I went thought my Great Big Notebook of Fic Ideas and finally transcribed it into a googledoc. While I worked I took the opportunity to sort through ideas and WIPs and restructure the writing queue and figure out which stories I wanted to give priority to in the upcoming year.

WIPs and Ideas )

Anyhow. Sorting through this gave me the chance to work out what I’ve got and what I want to do next. So instead of posting goals, I’m going to post a very rough Writing Queue:

The List )

So, I am absolutely not going to finish all of those this year, I know that right now and I am not planning on trying. Because it's over half a million words and even if I weren't coming off a long bout of writer's block, there would still be no way. Plus, I don't plan on limiting myself exclusively to these. Numbers 1 and 2 are both hard-and-fast Must Finish ASAP, but once I get those done I'd like to try to get some shorter fics posted in between working on the longer ones, and also I plan on doing Erised again this year and the length of that one will be entirely dependent on who I get assigned and what they request. But I think this is a good place to start, as far as getting organized goes. I'm hopeful that by saying "Here is the list of things I am working on" that it'll give me enough direction that I'll be able to focus on those and won't go around starting fifty bazillion new WIPs. ::nodnod::

Got behind on this, so I'll be catching up over this week!

Day 7: In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

Okay, doing Harry Potter for this since it's the fandom I'm most active in/have been involved in the longest and most consistently. I actually don't have a clear favorite scene or bit of canon, but the parts of the story I love best are the quiet moment between the action. The little day-to-day bits where Harry is just Harry in between being the Boy Who Lived. All the times they go to have tea with Hagrid. Doing homework in the Gryffindor common room. De-gnoming the Weasley's garden. Rushing to class or having breakfast, any of those little bits tucked away between the big, important scenes. And that's not to say that these scenes are not important or don't move the plot forward because a lot of the time they do (all hail JKR for being amazing like that) and they also serve the very important function as serving as lulls between the action, contrast points for all the big, extraordinary things Harry constantly does. But these little bits of ordinary-ness, with Harry and his friends hanging out and just being together warm me more than anything else because I firmly believe that those moments are worth more than gold to Harry. Knowing that he's got friends who love him for being himself.

Day 8: Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them.

Done! I sent messages to a couple of writers I admire from a fandom in which I am much less active/talkative. <3

Skipping Day 4 because, although I was sorely tempted by the suggestion of "draw a stick figure comment"--something at which I EXCEL--I can't. Maybe next week, when Mr FTS returns to work. Currently he's on vacation, and home all the time, and is basically just a giant distraction. I am having fantasies of an empty, QUIET house, which I will have again as of Monday morning.

Day 5: Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback.

Done! And even on the proper day even though I didn't post about it then. Went back to my Erised gift and left the giant flaily comment it deserved. Because it was awesome and wonderful and amazing and even better the second time around and if you haven't read it yet, you totally should! It's pretty much all of my favorite things packed into 8.5k and it somehow manages to be both ridiculous and feelsy and, oh gosh, words can't even say how much I love it. So, go read it. Right now. Right this minute. And if you've already read it then you should read it again. It's gone straight on my list of comfort fic, because there's no way you can read this and not be in a better mood afterward. <3 <3 <3

Day 6: In your own space, create your own challenge. What’s something you want to see more people doing in fandom? Is there something you’ve tried that you think other people would enjoy if they gave it a go? Dare your friends to try it out, and have fun with it.

Oh gosh, I don't know? I sort of want to steal [livejournal.com profile] gracerene's wish for more people to put up a likes/dislikes post because, yes, that makes it SO MUCH EASIER for people to write for you. SO much easier.

But I think I'll say I want people to post more in general. And I realize I've been bad about this myself so this is a challenge I'm taking up as well! Because for me, one of the most fun parts of it is getting to know the people behind the fic, and the friendships that come from that. So, more posting. That's my answer.

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

Oh, this one was hard. Really really hard. But I went into this with the approach of, if I was talking to someone who'd never read anything by me and I wanted to give them a sampling of the sort of thing I do, what three stories would I pick?

So:

1. Matchmaker, Matchmaker I really like this one. It's short-ish and fun, and I personally feel that it's one of the most creative plots I've come up with? Basically, Harry lives in Grimmauld Place, which is semi-sentient and sort of mad that there's not a Black living there anymore, so it sends him visions of him and Draco in a relationship to try to get them together. There's sweetness and loads of domesticity, and a strong Harry & Hermione friendship, and smut, and marriage proposal(s). This is the sort of silly thing I have the most fun writing.

2. At the Crossroads There We'll Meet This one is a bit more serious and a little bit angsty. Harry keeps dying, and Draco, in possession of a time-turner, keeps interfering to save him. I think this one feels a bit more true to canon than some of the other (sillier) things I've written. The whole thing sort of calls back to how lucky Harry truly is, because there are a lot of times in canon that he really should have died and didn't, and I enjoyed playing around with that idea.

3. The Light More Beautiful This was a gift for the lovely LQ, whose list of content she'd like to receive lined up almost perfectly with the sort of fic I like. I had an absolute blast writing this thing, and I think it shows in reading it. This was also the first time I felt really comfortable writing a novel-length things, the pacing and plot etc etc. This is also my very favorite version of Harry I've ever written. Featuring a reimagining of the way 6th year might have gone, a very strong Harry & Pansy friendship, lots of Auror stuff, mystery, and nothing in Draco Malfoy's life going the way he wants it to.

(I was very torn about reccing Blue Sunny Day instead of Crossroads, and Twice as Much as an Earthquake instead of Matchmaker, but these I think are the three I'd pick.)

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

Ooh, this one is hard because I'm so tempted to just say ART ART ART!! For all three of them. XD

1. So I will just say ART ART ART!! for the first. I've received art for my stories a few times before and it's the most wonderful thing, knowing that something I created inspired another person to go create something themselves, and it's so interesting to me to see a little glimpse of what they imagine when they read my fic. So wonderful. <3

2. Fic! Gift!fic is the best. That someone would take their time and use it to make something for me, that they thought I would like is just. So amazing. I love it.

3. Messages! Not just comments about my own fic (though that's nice too!) but I love it when people message me specifically to say, "hey I read this story and thought you would like it!" or to share a silly headcanon they thought I'd appreciate, or even just about some random thing they thought I'd like to reminded them of me or just to say hi. <3

4. GAY PENGUIN STUCKY AU WHERE ARE MY PEBBLE COURTING GAY PENGUINS!?! (You know who you are.)

In your own space, talk about why you are doing the Fandom Snowflake Challenge? What drew you to it as a participant? What do you hope to accomplish by doing these challenges?

So, I'm going to do this thing this year, because a) it always looks fun when other people have done it in years past and b) one of my goals this year is to be more active in fandom and hopefully this'll get me in the habit of posting more often!
