Comment-A-Thon
May. 11th, 2014 06:13 pmAnd I'm done. There's still more time to go before it's over, but sorry team Slytherin, I'm calling it here.
62 comments on 5 pieces of art and 57 fics totaling 890,027 words. This is slightly higher than how much reading I think I normally do, due to catching up on DracoTopsHarry before reveals, but it's still very interesting for me to put a number to it.

. We win.Dumbledore will swoop in last minute and give everyone a bajillion points for rule-breaking which is BLATANT FAVORITISM AND TOTALLY UNFAIR.There. Fixed that for you.

Date: 2014-05-12 12:36 am (UTC)In my view, J.K Rowling always gave Harry and the other Gryffindors everything they wanted without them having to make much of an effort. Reading the books, the Golden Trio do get rewarded for breaking the rules, whilst other children would've been punished. It's one of the things that I've noticed reading the books as an adult, when I used to just let it go as a child and not really notice it.

Date: 2014-05-11 11:28 pm (UTC)I love super long fics. I usually have one going at any given time and I read a few chapters here and there in between other things.

Date: 2014-05-11 11:26 pm (UTC)Capitu is amazing at commenting even when there's not points on the line, and Birds has been posting all those recs. I'm almost afraid to find out their totals.

Date: 2014-05-11 11:37 pm (UTC)Really, I think she out-Slytherined me on this one. Her strategy of commenting on loads of art and then reccing it will probably win out over my poorly-thought-out "Here's a fic that's almost half a million words, let's read that one for bonus points! Aaugh why is it taking so long to read this!?"

Date: 2014-05-12 12:09 am (UTC)You know, in canon Hufflepuff is like The House That Everyone Mostly Ignored. It's giving me an urge to write a fic in which Hufflepuff is awesome.
I think I did about the same amount of reading I normally do, but I did a TON more commenting. I'm pretty bad about leaving comments on fics that aren't H/D, and I never leave comments on older fics unless they're by someone I know, and mostly not even then. ::is a bad comment-leaver::

Date: 2014-05-12 03:23 pm (UTC)You should!
There's not much of it in livejournal, but back in the day, Hufflepuff was a house no one wanted to be on, and I never knew why! I know some of the things said in the book didn't paint as the coolest house or anything, but I've always loved it so much.

Date: 2014-05-12 01:17 pm (UTC)I reserve my flappy icon for things I am especially pleased with; I'm not pleased with you, missy. Reading a 500k fic on the sly, eh? I suppose you think that's very clever
and, damn it, it is. Got to hand it to you, that was way more cunning than me reccing all over the darn shop. For all I knew, you had FORGOTTEN about the comment-a-thon, and there you were, quietly racking up the long!fic bonuses....Well played, my friend, well played.

Date: 2014-05-12 02:00 pm (UTC)I made no secret of my 500k fic! I just... didn't really talk about it, either. And it got me way less points than you got for reccing, so clearly your strategy was better. ::makes notes for next time::
Like I'd have forgotten about the comment-a-thon. Arbitrary internet points bring out my competitive side. :D

Date: 2014-05-12 09:50 pm (UTC)I read a 50k fic thinking I was going to get 40 points for it. Was I fucked off when I realised the truth. Mind you, capitu read about 10 insane rarepairs before I told her about the 50 points cap for that. We're all a little older, and wiser XD
The POINTS and the RULES excited me very much. Also, the TABLES. And the DANRAD PENIS GIFS. All in all, it was a marvellous week.

Date: 2014-05-13 12:21 am (UTC)Fuck Emily Dickinson. Her poetry was ruined for me forever when a teacher told me that any one of her poems can be sung to the tune of a really annoying song which I shall not name because it'll ruin her for you forever as well. Also, to the tune of the theme song of a tv show. RUINED FOREVER.

Date: 2014-05-12 05:18 pm (UTC)Downside: I have very poor retention. I usually only remember a random detail or two along with a vague idea of what the main plot was.
Upside: This makes rereading awesome! It's almost like reading something for the first time again!
I figure it more or less balances out.
